The original firm was established by R. Marvin Shipman in 1947 as a one-man office specializing in structural engineering. He employed his first full time draftsman in April 1949, with other engineers joining the firm in 1950. During the following years the staff grew to eight. In November 1956, the firm incorporated as R. Marvin Shipman & Co., the first Professional Engineering Corporation in the State of Texas. At the same time the office moved to a new location on W. Olmos Drive. Structural Engineering was the prime discipline, but the firm also undertook several civil engineering projects. The staff continued to grow as additional civil engineering and surveying projects were undertaken.
In 1962 the firm began to concentrate more on land development and municipal projects. In 1975, R. Marvin Shipman retired from active practice and the firm was purchased by the present owners who had been employees and associates for many years. In 1977, the firm moved to 415 Breesport Drive and changed the firm name to Macina, Bose, Copeland and Associates, Inc. In 1999, the firm moved to the present location at 1035 Central Parkway North.
The firm continued to grow reaching a total of 93 employees in 1985. As the economy declined in Texas, so did the number of employees, leaving a nucleus of the 24 most experienced and proficient employees in late 1991. As the Texas economy began its recovery, loyal clients continued to utilize the firm's services, and the staff expanded to 60 employees. Henry R. Macina, P.E., retired on December 31, 1992. Roger W. Bose, P.E. was elected President of the firm and Robert A. Copeland, P.E. was elected Executive Vice President. The other four principals in the firm are Robert A. Liesman, P.E., Senior Vice President and Treasurer, Samuel B. Bledsoe, P.E., Senior Vice President and Secretary, David L. Allen, P.E., Vice President, and Robert A. Copeland, Jr. P.E., Vice President.
After the death of Roger W. Bose in February 2002, Robert A. Copeland, P.E. was elected President.
